HOME BEYOND THE DAWN
HOME BEYOND THE DAWN is an immersive video installation featuring works by over thirty Ukrainian contemporary artists. It explores the evolving concept of home in Ukraine—something that continues to be under threat today. The included artworks give audiences access to a cross-section of contemporary art practices in Ukraine, with a diverse roster of artists from different regions, backgrounds, and generations. The project deals deeply with war and an embattled vision of home—where the strength of our walls, their protective capacities, and the need to keep enemies out are defining characteristics. It also, however, reaches for an expanded vision of home—where home is a space of open doors, community belonging, shared values, and welcome friends. While the project’s narrative approach and featured artworks are illustrations of this vision, the deep cooperation between our Ukrainian team and the commissioning body at the EU are an expression of these values in practice. The project’s vision of home is about Ukraine’s place within the larger democratic world, where respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, human rights, and the rule of law define neighborly relations and pluralistic forms of justice. Ukraine’s current struggle against the enemies of these ideals is more than a localized war of defense—it is the active conceptualization of what home can mean for us all.
HOME BEYOND THE DAWN was written and directed Natalia Matsenko, Yuri Yefanov, Clemens Poole, and produced with the support of the European Union External Action Service.
